The town of Dalaman (pop. 20,000) on Turkey's Mediterranean coast between Marmaris and Fethiye (map), exists for farming and for Dalaman International Airport (DLM). The airport, 5.5 km (3 miles) south of the town center, receives domestic flights from Istanbul daily, and nonstop flights from Europe (charter and scheduled) several times weekly. To fly to Dalaman from a Turkish city other than Istanbul, you will probably have to connect through Istanbul.It's now got a shiny new International Terminal to make travelers' passage through Dalaman a lot nicer:But be warned: prices for food and drink are quite high: YTL8 for a small tea, YTL10 for coffee, YTL14 for an Efes beer. Yikes! You may want to bring your own provisions.

From the airport's Domestic Terminal, Havas airport buses run in conjunction with all Turkish Airlines, Onur Air, Fly Air and Atlasjet flights to and from Marmaris and Fethiye, which means there are about four daily buses to and from the airport from each town. (Coming from the International Terminal, turn left and walk 200 meters to the Domestic Terminal to catch the Havas bus.)

Buses leave Marmaris's Turkish Airlines office about 2.5 hours before each flight time, and return from Dalaman Airport after the arrival of each flight. The schedule is similar from Fethiye. More...

You can also take a Dalaman Airport Taxi to Dalaman's Otogar (bus terminal), and from there an intercity bus. This only works if you arrive at Dalaman airport in the morning or early afternoon, though. More...

Otherwise, private services transfer passengers to Dalyan, Fethiye, Kalkan, Kas, Köycegiz, Marmaris, Mugla and other western Mediterranean resorts and towns. Transfer services may cost US$60 to US$150, plus 15% tax, per car (one or two persons) depending upon your destination. More...

There is no train service anywhere near Dalaman (map). The nearest railway station is at Denizli (near Pamukkale).

Take the cost of ground transportation into account if you plan to fly into or out of Dalaman. You may end up deciding to use another airport (such as Bodrum or Antalya), or to rent a car.

Transfer Between Terminals

The terminals are within walking distance of each other. There are walkways connecting them.

Driving Directions

Getting to the airport by car is easy whether you arrive from the east or the west. From either direction, follow the D400 motorway and exit towards the south on route 5, which goes to Dalaman and the airport. There are signs to the airport from the motorway.

There are 390 short-term and 390 long-term parking spaces at the airport.

Money and communications: A bank branch, ATMs, a currency exchange bureau and a post office are located in the terminal building.
Eating and drinking: There are restaurants and fast-food outlets with a good range of Turkish and other dishes and snacks on offer in the terminal's food court.
Shopping: A shopping centre built as a Grand Bazaar houses outlets selling a great variety of Turkish products, from carpets and leather items to jewellery, foodstuffs and handicrafts. There are duty-free shops both in the arrivals and departures areas of the international terminal. A newsagent and a florist are also available.
Other facilities: The airport has an emergency medical clinic. A small mosque, synagogue and chapel are available for prayers. A game room featuring various computer games is also available.

Conference and Business Facilities

There is a CIP lounge with a ‘Business Corner' offering Wi-Fi Internet access.

Facilities for Disabled Travellers

The new terminal building has toilets for wheelchair users, lifts, ramps and escalators that help facilitate access for disabled people.

Children are prohibited from travelling in the front seat until the age of 10 years.

It costs a minimum of YTL60 per day to rent a car in Turkey when all expenses are included, and from the better companies the cost is more like YTL75 to YTL90.

This is for the cheapest hire car at the lowest-priced agency: standard (manual) transmission ("stick shift"), without air conditioning, but with most additional charges such as insurance, fuel, taxes, tolls and parking included. Larger agencies with offices in many cities and resorts, better cars and service, may cost more.

Cars can be hired in most Turkish cities and resorts and reserved online. Small local rental companies may have the lowest rates. They may have decent cars adequate for sightseeing in the immediate area, but if you wander farther afield you may want the security of a larger company with multiple offices and larger staff. If you have a mishap or breakdown, a larger company will be able to come to your aid more quickly and expertly.

Turkish rental cars tend to be smaller European and Asian models with standard (manual) transmission and radio. They're usually described as "5-passenger" cars, but five adults do not ride comfortably for long distances; rather, they're good for two to four adults, or two adults and one or two children, and not a lot of luggage. Their small engines make hauling four adults and their luggage a slow process. More expensive cars are larger, more comfortable and more powerful.

Child safety seats are often available (for a fee of about YTL15 per day), but you should reserve yours in advance to make sure it's there for you. We at Beyaz Gul don't charge for the child seat.
